Speed Training: 7 Exercises To Improve Your Speed

Preview

1. Warm up. Before you dive headfirst into the workout, make sure to warm your body up first. Do a few rounds of squats, calf raises, and lunges or go for a quick jog just to prepare your muscles for the strenuous workout to come.
2. Resistance bands. Training with resistance is a great way to increase speed. By using bungee resistance bands, you can increase speed agility. Running with a resistance bungee band attached to you will force your body to work harder and build up muscles that you may not be able to build up by just running on your own.
3. Sprints. What do sprinters do for training? They SPRINT! If you never run fast, you won't get any faster. A low dose of sprints in your normal training can give you the power, strength, and efficiency needed to set your next personal best.
4. Sled pulls and pushes. Sprinting while pulling or pushing a sled will help to increase speed and strength. Be sure to use a light enough weight that you're still able to maintain a good speed while pulling or pushing the sled.
5. Squats. Squats are a typical option for any kind of training but specifically for strengthening the lower body. You can build a base of strength with higher rep ranges of 10-15, but if you choose to add weights a lower number of reps can also be very beneficial.
6. Jumping rope. Jumping rope is a great workout to build speed in short bursts. Jump as fast as you can for 20 - 30 seconds at a time to work on the fast- twitching muscle movements in your calves and thighs.
7. Running downhill. Assisted speed or over-speed training such as running downhill actively causes the body to move at a faster rate than it can on its own.

The 10 Best Speed Exercises STACK

Preview

1. Power Clean or Clean Pull. To be fast, you need to be powerful. A good way to build power is by training the Power Clean (or any Olympic lift variation).
2. Squat. The Squat is one of the best exercises no matter what your goal is in the gym, so it’s an obvious pick for being one of the best for improving speed.
3. Deadlift. Like the Squat, the Deadlift is a clear choice for this list because it increases the amount of force you can put into the ground. You can use both a trap bar or a barbell for this move.
4. Sled Push/Sprint. Incorporating sled work into your program is a great way to build strength and speed for sprinting. It’s especially valuable for accelerations because of the forward body angle.
5. Rear Foot Elevated Split Squat. Many athletic movements take place on one leg, including sprinting, so it’s a good idea to utilize single-leg exercises in your training.
6. Single-Leg Romanian Deadlift. The Single-Leg RDL is another great single-leg movement, but it focuses on your hamstrings and glutes, or your “go” muscles.
7. Broad Jump. No list of the best exercises for improving speed would be complete without some plyometrics. This move teaches your muscles to contract explosively, an essential trait of speed.
8. Single-Leg Hurdle Jumps. Single-Leg Hurdle Jumps train quick single-leg movements and deceleration, important for multi-directional speed and quickness.
9. Depth Jumps. This is one of the best exercises to increase explosive power needed to sprint. Stand on top of a bench or plyo box. Step off the edge and immediately jump as you touch the ground.
10. Pallof Press. Sprinting takes a tremendous amount of core stability, so it makes sense to involve core stability exercises in your training. These can be performed with a cable machine or a resistance band.

While speed is often used to describe the maximum velocity you can produce, it can still be divided into four individual categories; reaction time, acceleration, maximum speed, and speed endurance. Top 9 Running Workouts To Build Speed And Endurance ISSA

Preview

1. Sprint Workout. There are many benefits associated with a sprint workout. Speed and endurance are two. Sprint training also helps build muscle and burn fat.
2. Hill Workout. An animal study found that hill running helps increase lactate threshold. This refers to lactate that accumulates in the blood faster than your body can remove it.
3. Interval Workout. High-intensity interval training (HIIT) involves alternating between short bursts of intense effort and slightly longer, yet lower intensity.
4. Long Run Workout. For clients interested in running a marathon, a long run workout is a great way to improve endurance. It trains their body to sustain an elevated heart rate and more stress on the body for a longer period of time.
5. Easy Run Workout. Many running workouts require going full-out, even if for short periods of time. There are also benefits of running at an easy pace.
6. Tempo Run Workout. What exactly is a tempo run? It’s a run that feels difficult, but not too hard. The goal of this run is to push your body in a controlled, sustainable way.
7. Progression Run Workout. As the name suggests, progression runs involve starting slow, then speeding up. This helps boost endurance, reduce fatigue, and aid in recovery.
8. Fartlek Workout. Unlike many of the other types of running workouts, a fartlek workout is not structured. The runner switches from moderate to high intensity in an unpredictable fashion.
9. Recovery Run. It’s not uncommon for endurance athletes to do a recovery run within one day after engaging in an intense training or competition. These sessions involve short, easy runs that increase heart rate to roughly one-half of the client’s max.

9 Ways To Increase Running Speed Runner's Blueprint

Preview

1. Strength Training. When it’s done the right way, weight lifting strengthens key muscle groups for faster, more injury-free running.
2. Interval Training. Interval training is the most satisfying way to work on your speed. It involves alternating intervals of high and low intensity while running to build both speed and endurance.
3. Drill Training. Speed drills are another strategy you can use to improve your running time. These improve running form, increase coordination, and boost running cadenc e—vital elements of speed.
4. Hill Training. Want to take your interval training to the next level? Hit the hills. Pounding the incline helps build strength in your quads, hamstrings, and calves.
5. Plyometric Training. When broken down to its most basic elements, running is really just a form of jumping from one foot to the other.
6. Jump Rope. Not all steps for improving running speed are running steps. Your cross-training program—AKA your non-running workouts—matter too.
7. Get The Right Form. Another vital key to running faster—at any pace or speed—is to run more efficiently. When you’re running more efficiently, you’ll be able to cover more distance more quickly without feeling as tired since you’ll be using less energy.
8. Lose Weight. Research published by the American College of Sports Medicine revealed that losing weight (fat, not muscle) can help runners improve running times—cutting roughly two seconds off a mile for each pound lost.
9. Be Consistent. A boost in running speed comes from practice and consistency. This means hitting the pavement multiple times per week for numerous consecutive months to accumulate endurance, stamina, and strength.

1. Striders. Striders are short sprints you can use as a pre-run warm-up. They are not actually a warm-up though. You should do your normal warm-up (like superburpees) before doing striders.
2. March to Stride. Increasing your stride length is a good way to increase speed running. The march to stride is a simple exercise to achieve this. Start by marching with an exaggerated knee lift, leg and foot push-off, and arm drive.
3. Quick Feet. Another method of how to increase speed running is with quick feet drills. The quicker your feet, the faster you run. It also makes your ability to change direction smoother.
4. Yasso 800s. Yasso 800’s are a great way to increase running endurance. Marathon runners often do them when training. To do Yasso 800’s, run 800 meters. Then, jog or walk for the same amount of time to recover.
5. Tempo Run. The tempo run is another exercise for how to increase endurance running. They are also called “Lactate Threshold” workouts. To do a tempo run, find a comfortable yet hard pace and hold it for 20 minutes.
6. Hill Repeats. Hill repeat workouts are great for all runners who want to know how to increase speed while running. They are also great for building strength, confidence, and mental endurance.
7. Fartlek. Arguably, the best way to increase running speed and endurance is with fartlek. To use the fartlek training method, start to run at your normal pace.

2. Prowler Push. It's easy to have a love/hate relationship with the Prowler sled. Without even spending that much time on it, it can completely exhaust you — but in the best way possible.
3. Sled Pull. By having a weight attached to your midsection, you are exaggerating the movements that help with sprinting (arm pump and knee drive). The added resistance also amps up your power output.
4. Alternate Leg Bound. Alternate leg bounds are a foundational move for any athlete but especially for speed demons. Alternate leg bounds, which look like exaggerated sprinting, teach you how to apply horizontal strength quickly into the ground.
5. Tire Flip. Tires make cars move faster, and they can make you move faster (if you know how to use them). Tire flips work your entire body, but they especially work on the explosion out of the bottom, which is key in starting a sprint.
6. Broad Jump With Prowler. Since you can't drive your arms forward in this exercise like you would in a regular broad jump, this is a major activator of your lower body.
7. Frog Hop With Medicine-Ball Throw. This exercise helps improve muscle elasticity, strength and explosiveness. HOW TO DO IT: Hold a medicine ball in your hands.
8. Resisted Sprint. Sprinting with resistance is a great way to work on knee drive and arm drive. And since you'll be fairly contained (and have a partner on hand), this is the perfect time for you to work on form.
9. Kettlebell Swing. The kettlebell swing is an incredible exercise to increase explosiveness and help your speed. HOW TO DO IT: Begin with your feet wider than your hips and the kettlebell held with both of your hands in between your legs.
10. Skipping. This one may remind you of your school days, but it's perfect for building explosiveness and elasticity — two key components of sprint speed.
11. Hill Sprint. What better way to end your horizontal training session than with hill sprints? With a forceful knee lift and aggressive arm pump, hill sprints are one of the best exercises to help with acceleration.

4 Types Of Speed Workouts That Increase Running Pace

1. Tempo Runs. Tempo runs are often misunderstood. But they’re not as complicated as some runners make them out to be. In short, a tempo run is a running workout in which you sustain your 10K pace for the duration of the run (with a slower warm up and cool down, obviously).
2. Interval Workouts. Intervals are probably the most common speed workout – most people have heard of them, even if they’ve never run track before. By definition, interval workouts are a type of workout that alternates bursts of high intensity and low intensity or rest periods.
3. Fartleks. My favorite running word. I don’t care what you say, no other sport has a better word than “fartlek”. Fartlek, which means “speed play” in Swedish, is an unstructured running workout that is done by feel as opposed to regimented time or distance.
4. Hill Running. Ah, hills. Many runners have a love-hate relationship with hill running (I get it). Maybe they were used as punishment in another sport (poor running..
