1. Teaching online courses for the first time requires a period of adjustment; professors must be able to assess how well an instructional method is working and adapt accordingly. Professors teaching classroom-based courses can evaluate instructional success through testing, students’ questions, and visual feedback during lectures. Online instructors can also evaluate various teaching methods through assessments and student communications, but the data-driven nature of online technology offers a less subjective measurement of success. Learning management systems can monitor progress and behaviors for each individual student, and then compile them for instructor review. The data, called learning analytics, tells professor how often students are logging in, how much time they spend on each task, and how well they master the material. Such tracking can be valuable. Learning analytics help instructors quickly identify areas of concern at any point so that they can adjust teaching methods,...

7 Tips On How To Prepare For Teaching Online ELearning

Preview

1. Plan Your Classes. Your students are not physically in front of you. In fact, they probably will never all be online at the same time, and they’re probably in completely different time zone.
2. Prepare And Master Technology. Teaching online requires a certain technical finesse, if you will. No, tech support is not right down the hall, but you’ve got this!
3. Set Up An Adequate Working Environment. Working remotely (in general) is the next challenge. Without the perfect environment and a good amount of self-discipline, stay-at-home-job can become a nightmare.
4. Innovate And Stimulate Discussions. Online classrooms, as mentioned before, run differently than traditional classrooms. These classrooms have the potential to feel cold mechanical.
5. Communicate Regularly. Maintain a consistent online presence. Communication is essential in the online classroom environment. Introduce yourself and give your students to also introduce themselves - help bring humanity and warmth into your classroom that online classes can easily lack.
6. Motivate Your Students. Everyone learns differently - and motivation plays a big part in the learning process. While some students are self-motivated in that learning something new is all the motivation they may need, some students may not be.
7. Ask For Help And Feedback. Your students can provide you with valuable feedback that can help move your class forward. With education moving online more and more, your students have probably already experienced an online classroom.

How Do You Learn To Teach Online? Here Are 9 Tips

Preview

Reviews: 1
Published: Mar 15, 2018
Estimated Reading Time: 6 mins
1. Read online teaching blogs. You’re here, and that’s a good start. The Internet is full of valuable resources to help motivated individuals learn almost anything they want.
2. Learn the software. Before you launch your course, you should familiarize yourself with all the software you plan to use. That includes your LMS, any video editing software for course presentations, online applications, and all SaaS programs you plan to use.
3. Consider taking a course. Yes, there are online courses available to teach people how to teach online courses. While plenty of entrepreneurs have become successful educators without them, they’re still a valuable resource for anyone a little less sure of their capabilities.
4. Attend a conference. The e-learning industry is huge, and that means there are plenty of conferences all around the country for you to attend. And you should go, because they provide a high-powered environment for you to learn a lot in a little bit of time.
5. Connect with other educators. Conferences are great for meeting other educators, but even if you can’t attend one, there are plenty of other ways to connect with other online educators.
6. Blog your way through it. Blogs aren’t just a learning resource for the readers—they’re a learning tool for writers as well. If you’re trying to learn anything new, writing about your experiences along the way can help you organize the materials you’ve learned in a way that makes it easier to recall later.
7. Prepare your course materials. For many of us, the best way to learn is by doing. It’s going to take you some time to pull together a complete online course.
8. Beta test. Once you have your course together, beta testing can help you work out some of the kinks in your plan. Was the course accessible? Did the quizzes match the knowledge level of the course content?
9. Be prepared to fail. Well, not fail permanently, but be prepared for some things to go less than perfectly. And by “be prepared,” I mean “have an improvement plan.”

4. Multiple Learning Tools. There’s debate over whether learning styles are scientifically valid. But anecdotal evidence points to the fact that some people learn best when they either see, hear, read/write, or act out information.
5. Teacher-Student Interaction. One of the most commons fears about digital learning is that the lack of face-to-face interaction will be detrimental to learners.
6. Experiment with Online Teaching Strategies. Not every online class or course is going to use all of these strategies (though it’s worth pointing out that many of them are related).

4 Tips For Teachers Shifting To Teaching Online Edutopia

Preview

Estimated Reading Time: 6 mins
1. Simplicity Is Key. Every teacher knows what it’s like to explain new instructions to their students. It usually starts with a whole group walk-through, followed by an endless stream of questions from students to clarify next steps.
2. Establish a Digital Home Base. In the spirit of simplicity, it’s vital to have a digital home base for your students. This can be a district-provided learning management system like Canvas or Google Classrooms, or it can be a self-created class website.
3. Prioritize Longer, Student-Driven Assignments. Efficiency is key when designing distance learning experiences. Planning is going to take more time and require a high level of attention to detail.
4. Individual Touchpoints Are Game-Changers. What your students will miss the most is the human connection that is cultivated in your classroom. The little interactions you have with them in the hallways, before and after class or during breaks in lessons, are irreplaceable.
