Top 10 English Golf Courses LINKS Magazine

Preview

4 hours ago GolfGuide

Estimated Reading Time: 7 mins
1. Royal St. George’s. Sandwich, KentArchitect: W.L Purves (1887) The patron saint of English golf. St. George’s is a classic, as well as highly distinctive, links course with fairways that twist and tumble, deep pot bunkers, and occasional semi-blind shots.
2. Royal Liverpool. Hoylake, MerseysideArchitect: Robert Chambers, George Morris (1871) A wolf in sheep’s clothing. From a distance—and, indeed, on arrival—Hoylake appears fairly flat and somewhat uninteresting, and yet nothing could be further from the truth.
3. Sunningdale (Old) Ascot, BerkshireArchitect: Willie Park Jr. (1901), Harry Colt. The quintessential English heathland course. If most Americans regard Augusta as their idea of “golfing heaven,” and the Scots feel similarly about Gleneagles, then Sunningdale Old is surely England’s equivalent.
4. Royal Birkdale. Southport, MerseysideArchitect: F.G. Hawtree, J.H. Taylor (1922) A mighty links where what you see is what you get. It is often claimed that professional golfers regard Birkdale as England’s finest links because (alongside many other attributes) it provides the fairest test.
5. Woodhall Spa. Woodhall Spa, LincolnshireArchitect: Harry Vardon (1905), Harry Colt. Part beauty, part beast. Middle England’s golf oasis, surrounded by fairly nondescript agricultural land in the remote county of Lincolnshire, surprises and shocks.
6. Royal Lytham & St. Annes. Lytham, LancashireArchitect: George Lowe (1897) A game of two halves. The early holes at Royal Lytham are straightforward and can lull golfers into a false sense of security.
7. Walton Heath (Old) Tadworth, SurreyArchitect: Herbert Fowler (1904) Heathland golf as it was meant to be. When, a century or so ago, a plethora of heathland courses were constructed in a sand belt 20–30 miles south and west of London, the intention was to recreate links conditions inland.
8. Rye. Rye, East SussexArchitect: Harry Colt (1895) A quirky, old-fashioned links with some brilliant short holes. If you are familiar with and enjoy Fishers Island then you’ll probably love Rye.
9. St. Enodoc. Rock, CornwallArchitect: James Braid (1907) Seaside golf at its most beguiling. St. Enodoc is located in the far southwest of England (think smugglers, pirates, and King Arthur) and its golf course is decidedly worth discovering.
10. West Sussex. Pulborough, West SussexArchitect: Guy Campbell, Cecil Hutchison (1931) Pine Valley in miniature. It has been claimed that if West Sussex were 1,000 yards longer it would be rated the best inland course in Europe.

1. Wachusett Country Club in West Boylston, Mass. Located just minutes from Worcester, Wachusett Country Club -- a Donald Ross design -- features breathtaking views of Mount Wachusett and the Wachusett Reservoir.
2. Newport National Golf Club in Middletown, R.I. This isn't the first time Newport National has made it on one of our, 'A Quick Nine,' lists. It was also previously nominated as one of the best public links courses in America.
3. Lake of Isles, North Course in North Stonington, Conn. Located just across the street from the Foxwoods Resort Casino, Lake of Isles is a fantastic Rees Jones layout, featuring rolling terrain, island greens and tees and extraordinary views from every hole.
4. The Ranch Golf Club in Southwick, Mass. The Ranch Golf Club was voted in the top 50 of all Public Golf Courses, according to Golf World magazine in 2010.
5. Triggs Memorial Golf Course in Providence, R.I. What little Rhode Island lacks in size, it more than makes up for in the form of GREAT golf courses. In terms of public, parkland courses, they don't get much better than Triggs.
6. Sugarloaf Golf Course in Carrabassett Valley, Maine. You might know Sugarloaf most famously for its unbelievable skiing in the winter months. Well, its golf in the spring, summer and fall is pretty spectacular too.
7. The Links at Outlook in South Berwick, Maine. Located in southern Maine, the Links at Outlook is just a little over a 1-hour drive from Boston. Along with the great views on this links-style course, you should also make it a point to enjoy a drink or meal after your round in the Red Barn (the clubhouse).
8. Mount Washington Course in Bretton Woods, N.H. According to its course description: The Mount Washington Course was voted "Best Course You Can Play" in N.H.
9. Okemo Valley Golf Club in Ludlow, Vt. Here is the description from its website: The Okemo Valley Golf Course is Vermont's first Heathland-style course and is unlike any other resort course in New England.

1. PEBBLE BEACH (Calif.) G. LINKS. 800-654-9300 / pebblebeach.com. Jack Neville & Douglas Grant (1919)/Herbert Fowler (R. 1920) 7,075 Yards, Par 72 / Points: 67.3675.
2. PACIFIC DUNES. Bandon, Ore. / 888-345-6008 / bandondunesgolf.com. Tom Doak (2001) / 6,633 Yards, Par 71 / Points: 64.8645. The second course built at Bandon Dunes Resort.
3. WHISTLING STRAITS (STRAITS) Haven, Wis. / 800-344-2838 / whistlingstraits.com. Pete Dye (1998) / 7,790 Yards, Par 72 / Points: 64.5043. Pete Dye transformed a dead flat abandoned army air base along a two-mile stretch of Lake Michigan into an imitation Ballybunion at Whistling Straits, peppering his rugged fairways and windswept greens with 1,012 (at last count) bunkers.
4. THE OCEAN COURSE. Kiawah Island, S.C. / 888-854-2924 / kiawahgolf.com. Pete Dye & Alice Dye (1991) / 7,849 Yards, Par 72 / Points: 64.4146. The first course designed for a specific event—the 1991 Ryder Cup—this manufactured linksland-meets-lagoons layout might well be Pete Dye's most diabolical creation.
5. SHADOW CREEK. North Las Vegas, Nev. / 866-260-0069 / shadowcreek.com. Tom Fazio, with Steve Wynn (1990) 7,560 Yards, Par 72 / Points: 64.1319. One of a kind, and maybe Tom Fazio's finest work ever.
6. PINEHURST (N.C.) RESORT (No. 2) 800-487-4653 / pinehurst.com. Donald Ross (9 1902 /Donald Ross & Walter Travis (A.9 1907) Donald Ross (R.1935) 7,588 Yards, Par 72 / Points: 63.9639.
7. BANDON (Ore.) DUNES. 888-345-6008 / bandondunesgolf.com. David McLay Kidd (1999) 6,732 Yards, Par 72 / Points: 63.3123. Maybe not as visually mesmerizing as Whistling Straits (which it beat for Best New Upscale Public Course of 1999), but talented golfers consider Bandon Dunes to be the consummate shotmaker's course, as good a total examination of one's game as there is in America.
8. BETHPAGE STATE PARK (BLACK) Farmingdale, N.Y. / 516-249-4040 / nysparks.state.ny.us. Joseph H. Burbeck & A.W. Tillinghast (1936) 7,468 Yards, Par 71 / Points: 63.1529.
9. ERIN HILLS (Wis.) G. CSE. 866-772-4769 / erinhills.com. Michael Hurdzan, Dana Fry & Ron Whitten (2006) 7,731 Yards, Par 72 / Points: 62.8534. Despite the legend spread by many, Erin Hills wasn't designed specifically to host a U.S. Open.
10. SPYGLASS HILL G. CSE. Pebble Beach / 800-654-9300 / pebblebeach.com. Robert Trent Jones (1966) 6,960 Yards, Par 72 / Points: 62.5718.
