2. PINE VALLEY. Tucked into sandy swaths of pine forest in Southern Jersey, this layout has been perennially ranked as one of the top three courses in the U.S., if not the world.
3. BAYONNE GOLF CLUB. Forget the somewhat uninspiring name or location near an industrial area near the ports (you may have to jostle for position with 18-wheelers in tight quarters while trying to enter the club), Bayonne is a modern marvel.
4. SOMERSET HILLS. There's a sleepy, charming feel to this magnificent course in Bernardsville that's one of the earliest (and best) designs by A.W. Tillinghast, who also was the architect for both courses at Baltusrol.
5. THE RIDGE AT BACK BROOK. Often simply known at "The Ridge," this Tom Fazio design in central New Jersey (Ringoes) has quietly and steadily been moving up in various rankings, for good reason.
6. GALLOWAY NATIONAL. Another Fazio work, Galloway National is near the Jersey shore and is cut through a heavily wooded and gently sloping property along the bay.
7. TRUMP BEDMINSTER (OLD) The third straight design from Tom Fazio on my list. Politics aside, Trump has built two terrific courses on an expansive piece of property in the hills of Central Jersey that used to be the private estate of car-maker John DeLorean.
8. PLAINFIELD. A classic Donald Ross course, Plainfield is best known as the host of the 2011 and 2015 Barclays Tournament, the first event in the PGA Tour's playoffs.
9. BALTUSROL (LOWER) No club in the state has as rich a tournament history as Baltusrol, which hosted the U.S. Open seven times and this year is home to the PGA Championship for the second time.
10. FORSGATE (BANKS) This is another wonderful design that doesn't always get the recognition it deserves. Just off the NJ Turnpike in Monroe Township (Central Jersey), Forsgate's Banks Course was built by Charles "Steamshovel" Banks, who reproduced many iconic template holes that the course owner handpicked from his overseas golf trips.
11. MOUNTAIN RIDGE. To be honest, Mountain Ridge caught me completely by surprise the first time I played it years ago. It's a bit of a hidden gem in Jersey.
