1. Be respectful. While it is easier to say hurtful or disrespectful things without standing face-to-face with someone, it is important to remember that your classmates and teachers are real people who are affected by the words you say and write.
2. Be aware of strong language, all caps, and exclamation points. It is easy for written text to be misread and misunderstood. Have you ever sent a text message with good intent but your recipient thought you were being rude?
3. Be careful with humor and sarcasm. Certainly you shouldn’t avoid being funny. We love to see your personality shine through in online classes. Many of our teachers are exceptionally funny too.
4. Yes, grammar and spelling matter. While texting, textspeak can b gr8 4 ur friends. In an educational setting (even online) however, keep it formal. Your written communication should be professional and reflect proper writing style.
5. Cite your sources. Whenever you are sharing an idea that originated from someone else (even if it is not word for word), it is good practice to cite that source.
6. Don’t post or share (even privately) inappropriate material. Enough said there. Nothing is truly private online.
7. Be forgiving. Remember that not everyone will know these rules before posting. Try to be understanding of others when they struggle with written communication.

8 hours agoOnline education success with netiquette

1. 18
Publish Year: 2012
Author: David B. Searls
Estimated Reading Time: 10 mins
2. Make a Plan. There are many possible motivations for becoming involved in online learning, whether in bioinformatics or any other field. There's nothing wrong with taking an online course on impulse, or to fill a very specific need, or simply for fun, if that's your goal.
3. Be Selective. We generally try to get best value-for-money in our education, as in all else. As the number of courses available continues to grow, you may have the opportunity to shop around.
4. Organize Your Learning Environment. Create an environment that will promote learning. In terms of time, a regular schedule (such as those imposed by the structured initiatives) can help ensure that you keep momentum, so that successive learnings reinforce each other before they have a chance to fade.
5. Do the Readings. There is a whole set of truisms about classroom education that carries over to online education with very little change, except perhaps the need for a greater emphasis when one is on one's own.
6. Do the Exercises. Another platitude that will come as no surprise is that you should do your assigned homework before you get to watch any TV. You know in your heart that you learn by doing, and once again it's too easy to neglect this when nobody is collecting and grading your work.
7. Do the Assessments. Many courses will have quizzes and exams in addition to homework, and once again it is important not to neglect these, for the obvious reason that you need to know how well you are absorbing the material.
8. Exploit the Advantages. There is at least some experimental evidence that online lectures with integrated assessment can produce results superior to the classroom for large courses, possibly by avoiding known issues of “poor attendance… and inappropriate behavior (talking, sleeping, reading) on the part of students who do attend class” [7].
9. Reach Out. It is widely believed that the greatest disadvantage of online learning relates to its isolated and impersonal nature [9]. This perspective is ironic given that the Internet is also known as the ultimate medium for social networking.
10. Document Your Achievements. A somewhat cynical view of traditional higher learning is that its value lies in the diploma as much as the knowledge.
11. Be Realistic. It is important to be realistic in your expectations of online learning. As Rules 3–6 suggest, the single most important factor in your success at learning will be your degree of motivation, which in turn will determine your receptiveness and work ethic.

1. Be Careful With Your Tone. While an online conversation with friends doesn’t necessarily require much thought, the same doesn’t go for when you are having a conversation with professors.
2. Be Accurate and Factual. The internet is a vast place with information coming from all sorts of sources. This is why you should be careful when providing information.
3. Search First, Then Ask. If you get stuck with a question on a certain assignment, it’s better to search for it before you ask your classmates or the professor.
4. Don’t Use Sarcasm Freely. While in-person, we communicate with the help of facial expressions and gestures. Conveying the same message online can prove more challenging.
5. Be as Polite as You Are In Person. Being polite on the internet should be as common as in real life. Unfortunately, that is not the case in many situations.
6. Use Proper Grammar and Punctuation. Many people tend to forget the rules that apply to writing when communicating online. However, resorting to proper grammar and punctuation can make the message seem more professional and thought out.
7. Stay on Topic. When there is a discussion happening, it’s crucial that everyone stays on topic. It’s easy to stray off the initial conversation, especially when there are many people participating in it.
8. Remember That Nothing Is Private Online. Online privacy is something you should keep in mind when typing anything. Most things you post and share are probably going to be there for a long time.
9. Make Clear and Brief Points. Unlike face-to-face interactions, taking too long to get to a point can result in the message getting lost in text. Hence it best to use short and clear sentences when trying to explain something.
10. Respect People’s Privacy. Treat others’ privacy the same way you would want some to handle your private information. You shouldn’t give the personal information of your classmates and professors online to anyone.

1. NO YELLING, PLEASE. There’s a time and a place for everything—BUT IN MOST SITUATIONS TYPING IN ALL CAPS IS INAPPROPRIATE. Most readers tend to perceive it as shouting and will have a hard time taking what you say seriously, no matter how intelligent your response may be.
2. Sarcasm can (and will) backfire. Sarcasm has been the source of plenty of misguided arguments online, as it can be incredibly difficult to understand the commenter’s intent.
3. Don’t abuse the chat box. Chat boxes are incorporated into many online classes as a place for students to share ideas and ask questions related to the lesson.
4. Attempt to find your own answer. If you’re confused or stuck on an assignment, your first instinct may be to immediately ask your instructor a question.
5. Stop ... grammar time! Always make an effort to use proper punctuation, spelling and grammar. Trying to decipher a string of misspelled words with erratic punctuation frustrates the reader and distracts from the point of your message.
6. Set a respectful tone. “An increasingly common netiquette faux pas is treating e-correspondence with faculty and staff as an ongoing chat among friends,” says Alexey Timbul, online professor at the Academy of Art University.
7. Submit files the right way. You won’t be printing assignments and handing to them to your teacher in person, so knowing how to properly submit your work online is key to your success as an online student.
8. Read first. Take some time to read through each of the previous discussion post responses before writing your own response. If the original post asked a specific question, there’s a good chance someone has already answered it.
9. Think before you type. A passing comment spoken in class can be forgotten a few minutes later, but what you share in an online classroom is part of a permanent digital record.
10. Be kind and professional. Online communication comes with a level of anonymity that doesn’t exist when you’re talking to someone face-to-face. Sometimes this leads people to behave rudely when they disagree with one another.

1. People learn by doing. Provide opportunities to apply new knowledge and skills by practicing in as realistic a setting as possible. Activities that involve thoughtful responses, decision-making and solving problems encourage active learning and also promote higher order thinking.
2. Learning is social. Create ways for participants to learn from each other, to interact, discuss and exchange information. Encourage them to join relevant social networks to learn from a diverse group of practitioners.
3. People remember stories. To make learning stick, tell relevant stories, present case studies and show examples. Talk about your own mistakes and your own successes.
4. Small bits of learning are most effective. Our brains have a limited capacity to perceive and process information. Breaking your content into small learning snacks or microlearning, will enhance comprehension and retention of knowledge and skills.
5. Learning is strengthened within a strong and caring community. There is a significant emotional component to learning that is often ignored. Take the time to build a cohesive and safe community where participants will feel free to share, interact and work together.
6. Learners need intelligent feedback. Learners require feedback to reinforce that they are on the right path, to correct misunderstandings and to validate their unique perspectives.
7. Learning takes more than one intervention. People will not develop a new skill from one lecture or one reading. Learning is an ongoing process. Circle back to what was previously taught and provide lots of opportunities to practice new skills.

1. The novel coronavirus, COVID-19, is a highly infectious, life-threatening disease declared by the World Health Organization to be a global pandemic. There is no current vaccine for COVID-19. COVID-19’s highly contagious nature means that contact with others, or contact with surfaces that have been exposed to the virus, can lead to infection. Additionally, individuals who may have been infected with COVID-19 may be asymptomatic for a period of time, or may never become symptomatic at all. Because of its highly contagious and sometimes “hidden” nature, it is currently very difficult to control the spread of COVID- 19 or to determine whether, where, or how a specific individual may have been exposed to the disease. Therefore, the College has put in place a new set of policies and expectations, introduced as the Garnet Pledge, which is designed to reduce the spread of COVID-19 at Swarthmore College. All students are expected to abide by the Garnet Pledge and this COVID-19 policy. Each s...

1. Make sure identification is clear in all communications. Begin with a salutation (“Hi, Jason!”) and end with your signature (“Hannah Kay, Criminology 101”).
2. Review what you wrote and try to interpret it objectively. When we speak face to face and are misunderstood, we have an on-the-spot opportunity to rephrase our words.
3. If you wouldn’t say it face to face, don’t say it online. When you’re working online, you’re safe behind a screen, but that’s no excuse to be ill-mannered or say things you would never say in public.
4. Don’t assume everyone understands where you’re coming from. Sarcasm and wit is often the spice of in-person conversation, but in online discussion, it can not only lose its edge, it can bite!
5. Don’t spam. Please don’t take advantage of your connection with the other students in your online classroom to forward emails and links regarding your political/spiritual beliefs or to sell your services.
6. Use emoticons. In casual chatroom settings, emoticons can help convey feelings that may otherwise get lost in translation, including humor, exasperation, exhaustion and even confusion.
7. Respect others’ privacy. Don’t give out another student’s personal email address without permission.
8. Remember, if it’s on the internet, it’s everywhere. Don’t share personal information about yourself in a public online forum, especially something that could put your safety or security at risk.
9. Follow the rules. Just as your online college posts guidelines related to academic integrity and student expectations, online forums also have rules of conduct.
10. Forgive and forget. If you’re offended by something another student says online, keep in mind that you may have misunderstood their intentions. Give them the benefit of the doubt.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the rules of netiquette for college students?

Don’t share personal information about yourself in a public online forum, especially something that could put your safety or security at risk. Follow the rules. Just as your online college posts guidelines related to academic integrity and student expectations, online forums also have rules of conduct.

What are the classroom rules for student success?

Classroom rules can help establish a sense of community when they’re built on collective classroom values. Classroom rules: 1. Have a vision. 2. Be a learner, not a finisher. 3. Lean into struggle. 4. Feed your passion. 5. Own your education. Start with the big picture: what core values should inform the way you and your students interact?

When to go over rules with your students?

At the beginning of each school year or semester, go over the rules in class with your students, leaving time for questions and discussion. Students are more likely to follow the rules when they understand the purpose behind them; rules that seem excessive or unnecessary are more likely to be ignored.

Where can I find the TAMU student rules?

Please find your campus point of contact for the student rules at https://committees.tamu.edu/committees/index/index/id/138. Additions, deletion, and changes may occur over the course of the academic year. Significant revisions will be communicated through The Battalion, appropriate university offices and this web site.
