Can I Walk A Marathon Without Training? Better Than Alive

Preview

Estimated Reading Time: 8 mins
1. Walking a Marathon Puts a Lot of Hours on Your Feet. When saying that walking a marathon takes 6-9 hours, this is 6-9 continuous hours without stopping.
2. Walking Isn’t Necessarily Easier Than Running. When people ask if they should walk a marathon, there’s often an assumption that walking is easier than running.
3. Marathons Have Cut Off Times. There’s a big difference between crossing the finish line of a race when the crowds are cheering and the announcers are blaring and crossing the finish line as they are tearing it down and opening the streets to traffic.
4. Doing Anything Without Training is Setting Yourself Up for Surprises, Possibly Bad Ones. Even seasoned runners know that there is only so much that your hours of training can prepare you for.
5. Mental Training is Just as Important as Physical Training. Runners are really good at being bored. Even better, being bored and being in pain. There’s nothing quite like being at mile 13 of your run, already tired of your playlist and dreaming of a stack of waffles, knowing that you’re only halfway done.
6. Without Training, You’re Increasing Your Risk of Injury. As we’ve talked about way too much now, 26.2 miles is no joke. Whether you’re running, walking, crawling, biking, or even hoverboarding, this is a long distance.

Can You Train For A Marathon Without A Long Run?

The 20 mile goal was standard when most runners training for marathons in the 1970’s were completing their long runs at around an 8 minute mile pace. Back then, the 26.2 distance was reserved for the truly hardcore and elite runners.

Just NowYep, I ran a marathon. And, yes, I ran an marathon without training for it a single day. In fact, looking back at my training journal, the most I ran all at once in the last couple months (maybe year or more) was the occasional mile sprint. However, that didn’t stop me from running 42,194.988 meters or 26.2 miles.

1. Get a couple short runs in the week of the race. Even if you haven’t had the ability or time to do the training you wanted to or planned to, do your best to get in a couple short runs he week of the race.
2. Be Prepared – Stuff & Sleep. Lay Out Your Gear The Night Before. Being prepared will allow you to get everything organized without the pressure of needing to get out the door quickly in the morning.
3. Run The Race With Someone To Keep You Company. The thought of running for 6+ hours alone is well – pretty discouraging. That’s a long, lonely, hard day.
4. Jog A Mile – Walk A Minute (Or Two) If you plan on running without having trained then you know it’s going to be your slowest marathon yet. Check out the pacing chart below and make a plan.
5. Enjoy The Day! So you didn’t have the ability or the time to train this go around like you’d hoped to. You’re here. Get to the start line anyway. Soak up the energy of everyone else around you.

Estimated Reading Time: 7 mins
1. If You Aren’t Young, Or In Great Shape— Don’t Follow My Example. If you have any existing issues with your knees, lungs, or heart: Do NOT do what I did.
2. Don’t Set A Time Goal. Unless you've trained, you have no reason to have a time goal. Your only goal is finishing the course. That's it.
3. Pace Yourself. My first 3 miles were easy-peasy. So easy, in fact, that I beat my PR for the last 5K I ran— and I wasn’t even trying. When I hit mile 5, I was still going pretty strong.
4. Don’t Forget Your Music. This tip is pretty much up to your own discretion. The first half of my race was incredible without music— but when I started crashing near the end, a power anthem would have helped so much.
5. Eat Intelligently The Week Before (And Day Of) Make sure you’re getting a lot of your calories from complex carbs, and that you’re drinking about 2-3L of water per day in the week leading up to it.
6. Bring nutrition with you! I didn’t consume mine at the recommended intervals, which is likely a big part of why I crashed at the last leg as hard as I did.
7. Have Realistic Expectations. This goes hand-in-hand with setting realistic goals (i.e.: Your only goal should be to finish). Realize and come to terms with the fact that you are going to HURT.
8. Wear The Proper Gear. I’m not typically an advocate for buying clothes for specific races or events— but if you don’t have the appropriate gear, your experience is going to be awful.
9. Talk To People. Before the race and during— runners are typically pretty friendly people, and I promise you’ll find someone who’s just as nervous as you.
10. For you— this is not a competition. The first few miles were such an incredible experience. I made the mistake of deciding that my goal was to finish before the person who was keeping pace with me.
