I Ran A HalfMarathon With No Training And It Changed My

1. Logically, I knew that a half-marathon (21.1km) is essentially just four consecutive 5km runs. A 5km run isn’t difficult (for me, though I absolutely recognise that this is the privileged perspective of a healthy, able-bodied individual). Even if the difficulty increased, I thought, I’ll just slow down a bit. I was desperate for a sense of self-worth. I needed a win. Amid all the stress and pressure I’d put on myself at work and in efforts to buy my first home, my anxiety had been running high for months on end. Every night my hyperactive brain would overanalyse every moment of the day, and an agonising fear of failure would course adrenaline through my veins. I wanted to run this half-marathon to prove to myself that I was capable of success. Somehow I had lost sight of my competitive confidence, and I wanted it back. I decided that my goal was to simply run the length of the course. No stopping. No walking. I didn’t need to go fast.

What It’s Like To Run A Half Marathon With No Proper Training

4 hours agoIt’s spurred me on to do another half marathon last year (2 hours 20) and then a 10k six months ago (1 hour, and I was sick on the medical tent afterwards. Some things never change). I’m never going to be super fast, but now I actually run for the pure pleasure of running and without having to have a race to train for.

1. If You Aren’t Young, Or In Great Shape— Don’t Follow My Example. If you have any existing issues with your knees, lungs, or heart: Do NOT do what I did.
2. Don’t Set A Time Goal. Unless you've trained, you have no reason to have a time goal. Your only goal is finishing the course. That's it.
3. Pace Yourself. My first 3 miles were easy-peasy. So easy, in fact, that I beat my PR for the last 5K I ran— and I wasn’t even trying. When I hit mile 5, I was still going pretty strong.
4. Don’t Forget Your Music. This tip is pretty much up to your own discretion. The first half of my race was incredible without music— but when I started crashing near the end, a power anthem would have helped so much.
5. Eat Intelligently The Week Before (And Day Of) Make sure you’re getting a lot of your calories from complex carbs, and that you’re drinking about 2-3L of water per day in the week leading up to it.
6. Bring nutrition with you! I didn’t consume mine at the recommended intervals, which is likely a big part of why I crashed at the last leg as hard as I did.
7. Have Realistic Expectations. This goes hand-in-hand with setting realistic goals (i.e.: Your only goal should be to finish). Realize and come to terms with the fact that you are going to HURT.
8. Wear The Proper Gear. I’m not typically an advocate for buying clothes for specific races or events— but if you don’t have the appropriate gear, your experience is going to be awful.
9. Talk To People. Before the race and during— runners are typically pretty friendly people, and I promise you’ll find someone who’s just as nervous as you.
10. For you— this is not a competition. The first few miles were such an incredible experience. I made the mistake of deciding that my goal was to finish before the person who was keeping pace with me.

7 Things No One Ever Tells You About Running A HalfMarathon

Preview

1. Your Foot Modeling Career Is Probably Over. Once I started serious, five-days-a-week training runs, I developed a massive blister on my left instep (that eventually turned into a very useful callus).
2. The Treadmill Is Fine, But It's Not the Road. How about that miserable winter we just had, eh? Risking sickness and injury by training outside would have been bananas, right?
3. You Should Practice Your Race-Day A.M. Getaway. Learning to pull away from runners who could be slowing you down is one thing; learning to pull away from your own pokey morning routine is something else.
4. You Don't Need a Playlist. Blah blah beats per minute blah blah inspirational music blah. As my wave of runners prepared for our start, the loudspeakers encouraged us to "CUE UP THOSE PLAYLISTS!"—
5. You Do Need Pockets. Even though I was the soul of minimalism at the starting line, I still found myself with a subway pass that needed to go... somewhere.
6. Running Is a Team Sport. At mile 12 of the race, the course dove underground and we entered the blackness of the Battery Tunnel. No cheering friends, no curious bystanders, just a pack of runners and excellent acoustics.
7. A Post-Run Drink Is Good; A Post-Run Disco Nap Is AMAZING. My husband and I (and a few hundred fellow runners and spectators) raised a post-race glass at Fraunces Tavern, which happens to be the end of the pub crawl George Washington led after the British finally left New York at the end of the Revolutionary War.

6 Things Nobody Tells You About Training For A HalfMarathon

Estimated Reading Time: 5 mins
1. YOUR MUSCLES WILL BE SORE. It seems like a no-brainer, but this was my first surprise. The first time I pushed my mileage beyond my usual 3-mile fitness run, my legs were sore!
2. YOU’LL NEED TO STRENGTH TRAIN. Speaking of soreness: My bum ankle and hips started to ache, especially on the days following my long runs. Your hips especially take a lot of impact.
3. YOU’LL WANT TO MIND YOUR FORM. I signed up for a running form class purely for interest, but what I learned actually helped bump up my pace. Again, this seems like a no-brainer, but it might be something you don’t ordinarily consider: You’ll want to propel yourself forward from the balls of your feet.
4. YOU MIGHT WANT TO RUN WITH WATER. I’m not the fastest runner, so when I started edging past six miles, and especially eight, I was outside for a little while.
5. YOU MIGHT WANT TO WALK. I never wanted to stop; my runs were runs. But after writing about the benefits of adding short walks to longer runs, I tried it for myself.
6. YOU MIGHT NEED NEW SHOES. You know the 6-month or 400-mile rule, but for a variety of reasons (including upping your weekly mileage), your shoes might lose their shape faster than you think.

13 Tips For Running Your Best Half Marathon Eating

Preview

1. Run for a reason. Training for (and competing in) a long race can be an arduous endeavor, even if you already have a few of them under your belt. Regardless of whether you’re a total newbie or a seasoned road warrior, ask yourself one simple question: “Why am I doing this?”
2. Train for at least 13 weeks. While it may seem a bit novel to allow yourself one week of training for every mile of the race, 13 weeks is long enough period of time to safely build up your long run, weekly mileage and key workouts, but not so long that you lose motivation and get stale with your training.
3. Buy two pairs of shoes. The miles will add up over the course of three months of half-marathon training, and one pair of shoes likely won’t be enough to handle the entire load.
4. Recruit a half-marathon training partner. Don’t go at it alone — training is better with a buddy. A training partner can keep you excited and accountable when the miles rise, workouts get more challenging or if motivation starts to dip.
5. Plan a 5K and 10K too. Three months out from your big race can seem like an eternity, so give yourself intermediate goals along the way to stay hungry and check your progress.
6. Run on different surfaces. Don’t get caught in a running rut. It can be easy to head out the door and run the same route from your house every day or cave to the convenience of the treadmill at the gym—yet again.
7. Get fast first. If you’re an experienced half marathoner targeting a PR this year, work on improving your speed at shorter distances by training like a 5K/10K runner in the first four to six weeks of your half-marathon training cycle.
8. Practice at race pace. The above statement seems like a given, but many runners, even experienced ones, will train either far slower or much faster than the pace they hope to maintain for 13.1 miles and then wonder why they couldn’t do so on race day.
9. Experiment with fuel. Nutrition is far from an exact science and it’s important to experiment with fueling and hydration strategies prior to race day.
10. Don’t overdo long runs. The long run is one of the first workouts runners think of when they think of training for a half marathon. And why wouldn’t it be?

Frequently Asked Questions

How to train for your first half marathon?

Train for your first half-marathon with these expert running tips. We understand why half-marathon training can be intimidating: It's 13.1 miles, and it can take hours to finish. But with the right training schedule, anyone can run a half-marathon.

Can you run a 5K and run a half marathon?

It may or may not be uncommon to go straight from running 5Ks to pushing for a half-marathon (and skipping the 10K distance) — but it’s what I did in training for my first 13.1-mile race.

How to train for a sub 2.00 half marathon?

12-week sub-2.00 half-marathon training plan. You should be capable of either a sub-50 10K, a sub-90 10-miler or a sub-4:30 marathon. Training will be five days a week, with an average weekly mileage of 30 miles.

How to run a marathon with ( almost ) no training?

Everyone is going to have their own goals and are going to be going down their own path. The only way to be successful is to figure out what works for you and pursue that vigorously. By mile 15 it surprisingly was much less painful to run than it was to walk. I found that keeping my mind occupied was also really important to success.
