1. In the Roman Kingdom and the early Roman Republic the most important division in Roman society was between the patricians, a small elite who monopolised political power, whose ancestry was traced to the first Senate established by Romulus, and the plebeians, who comprised the majority of Roman citizens. Adult males who were not Roman citizens, whether free or slave, fall outside this division. Women and children were also not citizens, but took the social status of their father or husband, which granted them various rights and protections not available to the women and children of men of lower rank. The common assumptions that the patricians and the Roman elite were one and the same throughout the history of ancient Rome, and that all plebeians were of non-elite status throughout the history of ancient Rome, are entirely incorrect. From the Late Republic era onwards many members of the elite, including an increasing proportion of senators, came from plebeian families. The first Roma...

1. Rome was a highly hierarchial and class-conscious society, but there was the possibility of mobility between most classes (indicated in the diagram above by dotted lines) because by the second century BCE class was no longer determined solely by birth. The classes described below superseded the old patrician/plebeian distinction, though certain elements of dress and religious positions and rituals were still reserved for patricians. There was a large gulf between the wealthy upper classes (the senatorial and equestrian classes, shown on the pediment of the temple above), and the poorer lower classes, though it was still possible—although quite difficult—to move upwards by acquiring sufficient wealth.

1. The class structure was an integral feature of the ancient Roman society. It was a clearly defined categorisation of the population of Rome based on their political privileges and social status. In this hierarchy of ancient Rome, the emperor was at the top and then came the patrician class which held the political and administrative power. Common people fell in the category of plebeians who could amass wealth but did not enjoy direct political power that others did. It was entirely possible for the Roman people to change their social standing in society. For instance, the slaves who were freed obtained certain rights and their children were considered free Roman citizens. The famous poet Horace, for example, was the son of a freed slave. Similarly, plebeians could obtain wealth and even political power while some patrician families fell into poverty during the middle and late Roman republic.
