ELearning ROI: How To Calculate ELearning ROI In 2020

Preview

21.086.4176 hours ago

1. eLearning ROIis similar to traditional ROI, the only difference is that you use it to determine the monetary benefits of providing online training to your workforce. It covers the costs spent in designing and rolling out a training course. These costs are compared with the benefits enjoyed by your employees and organization. An eLearning program is considered successful when you can demonstrate that the value it brings to the table outweighs its cost. Companies use eLearning ROI as a performance metric to assess whether their investment in a training program is profitable or not. eLearning for corporate training programs can be tricky when it comes to assessment. Merely performing a financial calculation isn’t enough. Conventional LMS (Learning Management Systems) often fail to prove their effectiveness. Hence, it comes as no surprise that many L&D teams struggle with demonstrating their success.

5 Easy Ways To Measure The ROI Of Training

Preview

Just Now

1. Use a training ROI calculator. The first way of measuring the ROI of any training is to use training ROI calculator. This is a simple way of calculating the ratio of the total cost of the training program relative to the total benefits of a training program.
2. Use supervisor assessments to calculate training ROI. Training ROI calculators work great for easily measurable net benefits such as sales figures, manufacturing work or other highly structured and clearly defined jobs.
3. Create an impact study to calculate training ROI. The third easy way of calculating ROI is to create an impact study. A ‘business impact’ is any change brought about by the training.
4. Use the Phillips ROI Methodology to calculate training ROI. In 1980, Jack Phillips published a 10 step training evaluation methodology called the Phillips ROI Methodology.
5. Use a training effectiveness measurement platform to calculate training ROI. The fifth and arguably the easiest way to measure the ROI of training is to use training effectiveness measurement platform such as Kodo Survey.

How To Successfully Measure The ROI Of Employee Training

Preview

1. Identify the outcomes of employee training. The goal of ROI calculations is to show the cost to benefit ratio of a training course or program. Every successful training program offers benefits, the trick is deciding which ones to focus on and then converting them into a monetary value.
2. Place a monetary value on the outcomes. Once your organization’s stakeholders or managers have selected the outcomes they want to study, the next step is assigning a monetary value to these outcomes.
3. Isolate the effects of the employee training. There are a wide number of methods to isolate program effects, depending on the type of job role, the nature of the training and the type of outcomes being studied.
4. Annualize the data and compare pre- and post-training results. The fourth step is to annualize the data, by converting the data to a 12-month estimate.
5. Determine employee training costs. Calculating training costs aren’t as simple as just knowing the costs of the course and the instructor. You have to know both the direct and indirect costs.
6. Apply the ROI formula. The ROI formula helps estimate the dollar return from each dollar invested in training. The formula is: ROI% = (Net profit – Cost of training)/Cost of training X 100.

1. The ROI formula, according to Phillips (2005), is the annual net program benefits divided by program costs, where the net benefits are the monetary value of the benefits minus the costs of the program. Phillips (2005) ROI formula is as follows: ROI (%) = Benefits – Costs x 100 ÷ Costs As an example, let’s assume that the benefits of a project management training program, isolated from other factors occurring within the organization, are $350,000. Let’s also assume that the total cost of the program is $125,000. The net program benefits are $350,000 – $125,000 = $225,000. Following the formula above: ROI = $225,000/$125,000 (1.8) x 100 ROI = 180%; thus for every $1.00 invested, $1.80 is returned after the costs of the project management training program are recovered.

1. Determine what benefits you want to quantify. This client in this example was measuring employee retention and absenteeism. (Get ideas for benefits you can measure.)
2. Gather pre and post training statistics for the benefits. Employee Retention: Pre-Training: 95% (5% turnover) Post-Training: 98% (2% turnover) Absenteeism
3. Calculate the dollar value of the benefits – Employee Retention. The average employee earnings before overtime are $45,000. The cost of employee turnover cited in The Wall Street Journal is 50% of the employee’s annual salary.
4. Calculate the dollar value of the benefits – Absenteeism. There are 2080 work hours in a year for one employee. (40 hour work week) For the 65 employees, there are 135,200 work hours in a year.
5. Calculate the total dollar value of the benefits from employee retention and absenteeism. $43,875 turnover + $10,122 absenteeism = $53,997. $53,997 in benefits from reduced turnover and absenteeism were gained.
6. Calculate the benefit to cost ratio. Total Dollar Value of Benefits/Cost of Training = Benefit to Cost Ratio. $53,997 / $5,000 = $10.79. For every dollar invested, $10.79 of benefits was returned.
7. Calculate the Return on Investment (ROI) $53,997 in benefits – $5,000 cost of training = $48,997. ROI is $48,997.
8. Use the above examples to help guide you in determining how much your training will return. Improve Your Organization’s Training ROI. Business Training Experts focuses on improving our clients’ profits by maximizing employee potential.

Evaluating Training And Results (ROI Of Training)

1. The last phase of the ADDIE model of instructional design, or systematic training, is evaluation. However, the evaluation really should have started even during the previous phase -- the implementation phase -- because the evaluation is of both the activities of the trainer as they are being implemented and of the results of the training as it nears an end or is finished. Evaluation includes getting ongoing feedback, e.g., from the learner, trainer and learner's supervisor, to improve the quality of the training and identify if the learner achieved the goals of the training. 1. Before progressing through the guidelines in this topic, the reader would benefit from first reviewing the information about formal and systematic training, especially the ADDIE model, at Formal Training Processes -- Instructional Systems Design (ISD) and ADDIE. 2. Then scan the contents of the fourth phase of the ADDIE model systematic planning of training, Implementing Your Training Plan. (This evaluation p...
