1. Determine what benefits you want to quantify. This client in this example was measuring employee retention and absenteeism. (Get ideas for benefits you can measure.)
2. Gather pre and post training statistics for the benefits. Employee Retention: Pre-Training: 95% (5% turnover) Post-Training: 98% (2% turnover) Absenteeism
3. Calculate the dollar value of the benefits – Employee Retention. The average employee earnings before overtime are $45,000. The cost of employee turnover cited in The Wall Street Journal is 50% of the employee’s annual salary.
4. Calculate the dollar value of the benefits – Absenteeism. There are 2080 work hours in a year for one employee. (40 hour work week) For the 65 employees, there are 135,200 work hours in a year.
5. Calculate the total dollar value of the benefits from employee retention and absenteeism. $43,875 turnover + $10,122 absenteeism = $53,997. $53,997 in benefits from reduced turnover and absenteeism were gained.
6. Calculate the benefit to cost ratio. Total Dollar Value of Benefits/Cost of Training = Benefit to Cost Ratio. $53,997 / $5,000 = $10.79. For every dollar invested, $10.79 of benefits was returned.
7. Calculate the Return on Investment (ROI) $53,997 in benefits – $5,000 cost of training = $48,997. ROI is $48,997.
8. Use the above examples to help guide you in determining how much your training will return. Improve Your Organization’s Training ROI. Business Training Experts focuses on improving our clients’ profits by maximizing employee potential.

1. The last phase of the ADDIE model of instructional design, or systematic training, is evaluation. However, the evaluation really should have started even during the previous phase -- the implementation phase -- because the evaluation is of both the activities of the trainer as they are being implemented and of the results of the training as it nears an end or is finished. Evaluation includes getting ongoing feedback, e.g., from the learner, trainer and learner's supervisor, to improve the quality of the training and identify if the learner achieved the goals of the training. 1. Before progressing through the guidelines in this topic, the reader would benefit from first reviewing the information about formal and systematic training, especially the ADDIE model, at Formal Training Processes -- Instructional Systems Design (ISD) and ADDIE. 2. 1. Training is an excellent retention tool. When employees are trained well and training is continuous, employees feel challenged and more likely to want to stay with the company because they continue to learn and grow. While there are expenses involved in training, the costs are nothing compared to what a company loses when they have a high turnover rate. High turnover costs are more than you may realize. Beyond having to train and onboard a new employee to replace the old one, you’re spending more money to interview candidates and advertising the vacant position. And until the new hire is up to speed on processes, their level of efficiency as a new hire who is just learning the ropes is leading to a decrease in overall productivity, costing you more money.

Calculating The ROI Of Your LMS: A 6Step Guide

Preview

Estimated Reading Time: 7 mins
1. Calculate Time-Savings Versus Traditional Training. Time is money. An LMS prioritizes employees’ time and enables them to be more efficient as they learn.
2. Review Previous L&D Expense Sheets. In any company, a reduction in expenses translates to increased revenues. An LMS cuts down on training expenses, such as printed training materials and site-rental fees.
3. Factor-In Employee Retention Rates. Employees with access to professional development opportunities are more likely to stay in a company. A high employee turnover results in increased costs for orientation and training.
4. Consider Compatibility And Data Integration Costs. Your new LMS may not mesh with your current third-party tools or support a compatible format. In which case, you will have to foot the bill for replacement software.
5. Determine The LMS Learning Curve. In some cases, your L&D team may require extensive training to utilize the new LMS and its features. This is yet another cost to factor when calculating Learning Management System ROI.
6. Assess The Costs Of Running An LMS. Your choice of LMS also determines the returns you will get from your investment. There is a broad range of systems on the market and each has its pros and cons.
