Reviews: 2
Published: Jan 11, 2021
Estimated Reading Time: 8 mins
1. General Assembly NYC. General Assembly has campuses around the globe, but New York City is where it all started. Located smack in the middle of the Flatiron District, General Assembly (or GA as many people refer to it) has courses across the coding spectrum.
2. Full Stack Academy. Offering immersive software engineering courses and summer coding programs in addition to fellowships to study web development in New York City, Full Stack is another excellent NYC coding option.
3. Hack Reactor. Hack Reactor offers part-time, full-time, in-person, and online coding course options. Rated one of the best options by outlets like Course Report and switchup, the San Francisco-based company has a campus in New York City in addition to a few others around the U.S. If you’re worried about leaving Fido at home while you learn to code, don’t—they campuses are pup-friendly.
4. App Academy’s. App Academy takes an interesting approach to payment: charging only once you’re hired as a developer. They select students based on skills and require just a refundable deposit of $3,000 that you get back if you’re not placed in a job that lands you at least $50,000 in compensation.
5. Codesmith. Unlike some of the other NYC options on this list, Codesmith has a clear focus on software engineering. Their coding bootcamp has been highly rated by Quora, Course Report, and Switch Up to name a few.
6. Flatiron School. The Flatiron School offers coding classes that blend the typical online class option with on-campus learning opportunities. Flatiron has campuses in several major cities around the globe, one of those being New York City thanks to a partnership with the WeWork coworking space.
7. Noble Desktop. Self-declared New York’s top design and coding school since 1990, Noble Desktop offers courses in both coding and design. From website and graphics to interfaces and videos, iOS apps, and animations, the breadth of options at Noble Desktop is appealing.
8. Queens Tech Academy. While most of the coding offerings in New York are located in Manhattan, not everything is on that tiny island. A perhaps refreshing departure from the previous coding class options, the Queens Tech Academy offers a part-time coding bootcamp based in—yep, you guessed it—Queens.
9. Recurse Center’s Coding Retreats. While the Recurse Center isn’t a fit for those just starting out coding, people with as little as six months of experience are welcome to take their courses so access is still pretty broad.

1. General Assembly. With 20 campuses around the world and an alumni network of 40,000, General Assembly is one of the best-known technology schools. Students looking for a career change might want to enroll in one of the full- or part-time courses on subjects like data analytics, user experience design and web development.
2. Spectrum Creative Consulting. This Brooklyn-based design studio also offers coding classes, though they focus heavily on front-end design rather than back-end function.
3. Noble Desktop. If you’re looking to study up on one particular skill, Noble Desktop might be your best bet. This 27-year-old school teaches courses in everything from HTML email to responsive mobile design to Adobe Illustrator.
4. Practical Programming. As its name implies, Practical Programming focuses on programming languages that do the hard work behind the scenes: SQL, a language used for database management, and Python, an easy-to-learn language often used in both web and app development.
5. Fullstack Academy. Ready to make a career change? You might want to consider the 13-week career accelerator at Fullstack Academy. Students learn front-end, back-end and database development through live lectures, programming challenges and hands-on workshops before working on both team and individual projects.
6. New York Public Library TechConnect. For free technical classes, you can’t beat the New York Public Library’s TechConnect program. Anyone can sign up for free one-off classes in basic HTML, Python and other languages, in addition to open lab courses where you can ask an instructor for help with personal projects.
7. Women Who Code Meetup. It will come as no surprise to hear that women are still drastically underrepresented in the tech industry. This 50,000-lady-strong nonprofit hopes to change that.
