1. For years, I have been joking with my students that I would teach probability with the same level of excitement even if I were woken up in the middle of the night and asked to teach it. Years later, as a new father, I started writing this book when it became clear to me that I would not be sleeping at night for the foreseeable future. This book is intended for undergraduate and first-year graduate-level courses in probability, statistics, and random processes. My goal has been to provide a clear and intuitive approach to these topics while maintaining an acceptable level of mathematical accuracy. I have been teaching two courses on this subject for several years at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. While one of these courses is an undergraduate course taken by juniors, the other is a graduate-level course taken by our first-year Masters and PhD students. My goal throughout this process has been to write a textbook that has the flexibility to be used in bothcourses while sacri...

3 hours agoThe probability space adds in--has this extra thing--the probability of each outcome. And really, it could be anything, as long is the probability of every outcome is between 0 and 1 and they all add up to 1. That's it. All right. Now, there's a natural interpretation of what the probability function is. And that is the probability of a sample

8 hours agoThe probability of A is how much cream cheese sits on top of A. Probability of B is how much sits on top of B. The probability of A union B is the total amount of cream cheese sitting on top of this and that, which is obviously the sum of how much is sitting here and how much is sitting there. So probabilities behave like cream cheese, or they

1. When analyzing a continuous variable or type of measurement using statistics, an analyst often assumes data is normally distributed. But, how can this normal assumption be verified? While there are numerical normality tests, an alternate approach is to use graphical methods. The old adage, “A picture is worth a thousand words”. This captures the idea that the human mind is good at discerning patterns. Assume the data is plotted on normal probability paper and shows a linear trend. Then, the data is said to follow a normal distribution. The analysis proceeds using the normal distribution and a wealth of statistical methods can be used. Probability paper is available for many distributions, including the normal, lognormal, Weibull, and exponential. These probability papers designs are specific to a distribution type. This article focuses on normal paper. Other probability papers and plots will be covered in future articles.
