8 Tips For Effective Online Learning Coursera Blog

Preview

Estimated Reading Time: 4 mins
1. Set daily goals for studying. Ask yourself what you hope to accomplish in your course each day. Setting a clear goal can help you stay motivated and beat procrastination.
2. Create a dedicated study space. It’s easier to recall information if you’re in the same place where you first learned it, so having a dedicated space at home to take online courses can make your learning more effective.
3. Schedule time to study on your calendar. Open your calendar and choose a predictable, reliable time that you can dedicate to watching lectures and completing assignments.
4. Keep yourself accountable. Tell your friends about the courses you’re taking, post achievements to your social media accounts, or blog about your homework assignments.
5. Actively take notes. Taking notes can promote active thinking, boost comprehension, and extend your attention span. It’s a good strategy to internalize knowledge whether you’re learning online or in the classroom.
6. Join the discussion. Course discussion forums are a great place to ask questions about assignments, discuss topics, share resources, and make friends.
7. Do one thing at a time. Multitasking is less productive than focusing on a single task at a time. Researchers from Stanford University found that “People who are regularly bombarded with several streams of electronic information cannot pay attention, recall information, or switch from one job to another as well as those who complete one task at a time.”
8. Take breaks. Resting your brain after learning is critical to high performance. If you find yourself working on a challenging problem without much progress for an hour, take a break.

Learning How (Not) To Learn Coursera Blog

1. Passive rereading. Sitting passively and running your eyes back over a page. Unless you can prove that the material is moving into your brain by recalling the main ideas without looking at the page, rereading is a waste of time.
2. Letting highlights overwhelm you. Highlighting your text can fool your mind into thinking you are putting something in your brain, when all you’re really doing is moving your hand.
3. Merely glancing at a problem’s solution and thinking you know how to do it. This is one of the worst errors students make while studying. You need to be able to solve a problem step-by-step, without looking at the solution.
4. Waiting until the last minute to study. Would you cram at the last minute if you were practicing for a track meet? Your brain is like a muscle—it can handle only a limited amount of exercise on one subject at a time.
5. Repeatedly solving problems of the same type that you already know how to solve. If you just sit around solving similar problems during your practice, you’re not actually preparing for a test—it’s like preparing for a big basketball game by just practicing your dribbling.
6. Letting study sessions with friends turn into chat sessions. Checking your problem solving with friends, and quizzing one another on what you know, can make learning more enjoyable, expose flaws in your thinking, and deepen your learning.
7. Neglecting to read the textbook before you start working problems. Would you dive into a pool before you knew how to swim? The textbook is your swimming instructor—it guides you toward the answers.
8. Not checking with your instructors or classmates to clear up points of confusion. Professors are used to lost students coming in for guidance—it’s our job to help you.
9. Thinking you can learn deeply when you are being constantly distracted. Every tiny pull toward an instant message or conversation means you have less brain power to devote to learning.
10. Not getting enough sleep. Your brain pieces together problem-solving techniques when you sleep, and it also practices and repeats whatever you put in mind before you go to sleep.

5 Innovative Techniques For Creating Online Video Lectures

Preview

1. Starting with an Existing Slide Deck. Instructors often have an existing slide deck for material they want to teach online. Using that slide deck as a starting point, review the slides for consistency and flow–chunking them up into the short video segments you will be recording.
2. Using an Outline vs. a Script. Since online videos need to be focused, succinct, and short, writing out a script can ensure these criteria are met. But some instructors prefer to work from an outline rather than a full script.
3. Using the “Late Night Talk Show” Model. Simply recording a lecture in front of a live classroom and using that video in an online course has many drawbacks.
4. Editing a Live Lecture. Even without adopting the full “late night talk show” model, there are other ways to turn a lecture delivered in a live classroom into short online videos.
5. Creating Video Scripts from Lecture Transcripts. Online lecture videos often make use of clearly written scripts to ensure the right content is delivered to online learners in the most efficient and effective way possible.
