1. Domain: The domain is the highest rank of organisms that are classified. The taxonomic ranks were invented by Linnaeus, but he did not invent the domain rank, that is used nowadays.
2. Kingdom: The kingdom was the highest taxonomic rank, before the introduction of the domain. In the past times, the different kingdoms were Animalia, Plantae, Fungi, Protista, Archaea, and Bacteria.
3. Phylum: After the kingdom, the phylum is the next rank. Its rank is more specific than the kingdom but is less specific than class rank. There are 35 Phyla lies in the kingdom Animalia, such as including Chordata (an individual having a dorsal nerve cord), Porifera (sponges), and Arthropoda (arthropods).
4. Class: Before the phyla studies, Linnaeus proposed the most general rank of class. There are 108 different classes’ lies in Animalia; including the Mammalia, Aves (birds), and Reptilia, among many others.
5. Order: The rank order is more specific than the class. Some orders of Linnaeus till used nowadays including Lepidoptera (order of moths and butterflies).
6. Family: The rank of Family is much specific. There is a total of 12 families lie in order Carnivora. Some families in Carnivora are Canidae, Felidae, Mephitidae, and Ursidae.
7. Genus: The rank Genus is more specific than rank of family. The Binomial Nomenclature is an organism’s scientific name that has the first part genus and the second part is species.
8. Species: The rank species is the much scientific taxonomic rank. Sometimes, species are divided into the subspecies, while all species do not have multiple forms that are different even known as subspecies.

1. Domain. The DOMAIN is the highest ranking of Biological classification at this time* and includes 3 Domains: Archaea, Eubacteria and Eukaryota. We belong to the Domain Eukaryota – which includes organisms with cells that contain a nucleus.
2. Kingdom. For many years there were 5 Kingdoms: Animalia, Plantae, Fungi, Protista, and Monera (you will still see these in most printed books). However, with the adoption of the Domain Level the present 4 Kingdoms are as follows: Animalia, Plantae, Fungi, Protista.
3. Phylum. Next come the PHYLA (plural of phylum). The Kingdom Animalia currently has 9 Phyla: Chordata (Chordates – mammals, reptiles, birds, amphibians, etc)
4. Class. Next comes CLASS. The Phylum Chordata is made up of many Classes. Mammalia (Mammals) Amphibia (Amphibians) Aves (Birds) Osteichthyes (Fish) or Actinopterygii (ray-finned fish)
5. Order. The Class Mammalia is broken down into 2 subclasses: Prototheria (monotrenes – like duck billed platypus) Theria. Then Theria has 2 infraclasses: Eutheria (placental mammals like us)
6. Family. Next comes FAMILY. The Order Primates is made up of many Families. (We are included in the Family Hominidae (human beings). There are also the families
7. Genus. Next comes GENUS. The Family Hominidae was once made up of many genera. We are included in the genus Hominidae (human beings). All the other genera in the Family Hominidae are extinct.
8. Family. Last comes SPECIES. As the only living organism living in the genus Homo, our one species is sapiens. Organisms are called by their genus and species (species is always lower case), so we are Homo sapiens.

1. One of the more recent updates has been the addition of a domain taxon, or group, to the top of the taxonomy chart. This is the largest taxon and separates all living organisms into three main groups: Archaea, Bacteria, and Eukarya. Both archaea and bacteria are prokaryotes, meaning the DNAin their cells is not membrane-bound, and eukarya are eukaryotes, meaning their DNA is contained within their cells’ nuclei. Following the domain level, the classification system reads from least specific to most specific in the following order: Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, and Species. A mnemonic device often used to remember this order is King Philip Can Only Find Green Socks.

Kingdom: Animalia
Taxonomic Hierarchy: Examples
1. Kingdom. The kingdom is the highest level of classification, which is divided into subgroups at various levels. There are 5 kingdoms in which the living organisms are classified, namely, Animalia, Plantae, Fungi, Protista, and Monera.
2. Phylum. This is the next level of classification and is more specific than the kingdom. There are 35 phyla in kingdom Animalia. For Example – Porifera, Chordata, Arthropoda, etc.
3. Class. Class was the most general rank in the taxonomic hierarchy until phyla were not introduced. Kingdom Animalia includes 108 classes including class mammalia, reptilia, aves, etc.
4. Order. Order is a more specific rank than class. The order constitutes one or more than one similar families. There are around 26 orders in class mammalia such as primates, carnivora, etc.
5. Family. This category of taxonomic hierarchy includes various genera that share a few similarities. For eg., the families in the order Carnivora include Canidae, Felidae, Ursidae, etc.
6. Genus. A group of similar species forms a genus. Some genera have only one species and is known as monotypic, whereas, some have more than one species and is known as polytypic.
7. Species. It is the lowest level of taxonomic hierarchy. There are about 8.7 million different species on earth. It refers to a group of organisms that are similar in shape, form, reproductive features.
