McKenzie converted Howe to a military school in 1895. Although the catalogs and letterheads said “Howe School”, the 1896 minutes of the Diocesan Annual Meeting called it Howe Military School. St. James Chapel was funded initially by a bequest of $10,000 from James Howe, a banker and lawyer like his half-brother.

Howe Military Academy is sponsored by the Episcopal Church. Begun in 1884, the school was originally a preparatory school for young boys preparing for ministry in the Episcopal Church. It became a military school in 1895, and fully co-educational in 1988. It is one of 28 military academies in the United States.

St. James Chapel – Howe Military School Alumni This is the west end of St. James Chapel as built (pictured). The organ was “probably a Hinners” according to Dr. John Durgan ’63, who took organ lessons while he was a cadet on the Kimball organ which was installed to replace the Hinners when the north transept was built.

Ultimately, the rigorous military structure provides students with the valuable skills they need to succeed in college and in life. The athletic program at The Howe School also has a military focus. Honor and integrity are paramount during organized sports competitions. In addition, a high level of personal physical fitness is always encouraged.
