1. Download American government language courses from LiveLingua. The U.S. government created comprehensive language courses through the Defense Language Institute, the Foreign Service Institute, and the Peace Corps. These courses were designed for Americans who would be living and working abroad. The Live Lingua project has made these courses available for more than 130 different languages. All of these are public domain materials, so most of them were initially created in the 1960s or even earlier. However, they can be a good start at learning a language.
2. Take a university course online. Through a Massively Open Online Course (MOOC), you can take an actual university course online in whatever language you want to study. Many prestigious universities offer beginning language courses for free. Check out EdX and Coursera for free language learning courses. You can also take courses in the language you're studying. You may be able to learn more about the culture or history of native speakers with one of these courses, as well as strengthen your reading and writing skills. You can "audit" many of these courses for free. You may have to pay a small fee if you want actual review of your work from a professor, or if you want to receive a certificate of completion for the course.
3. Bookmark translation and verb conjugation sites. At some point, you may want to buy a dictionary for the language you're learning, but there are many free websites that will translate words for you as well as conjugate verbs. For translation, try http://www.wordreference.com/. You might also try http://conjugator.reverso.net/conjugation-english.html for conjugation. If you're studying a less popular language, you may have trouble finding a good translation or conjugation site. However, they are available for most widespread global languages.
4. Try mobile apps to strengthen your vocabulary. There are a number of mobile apps, such as Duolingo, that teach you basic vocabulary in a language. Many of these apps are designed to essentially turn learning into a game. Make sure you understand what you'll get for free from an app and what you'll have to pay for. Most of these apps are free to download, but content may be limited until you subscribe. While you won't become fluent in a language using an app by itself, they can be important (and fun) tools to strengthen your vocabulary and reinforce your learning.
