Pōhakuloa Training Area lies in a high plateau between lower slopes of Mauna Kea to approximately 6,800 feet (2,100 m) in elevation and to about 9,000 feet (2,700 m) on Mauna Loa. The training area is about midway between Hilo, on the east coast and the Army landing site at Kawaihae Harbor. It is used by both the U.S. Army and Marine Corps.

Who first used the Pohakuloa Training Center??

The Pohakuloa Training Center was first used in 1943 by United States Marine Corps artillery units from the 5th and 2nd Marine Divisions. The area at this time was known as the Waikoloa Maneuver Area and was comprised of 91,000 acres (142 square miles) leased from local rancher Richard Smart.

What is the Pohakuloa base??

The northern boundary of the base is formed by Mauna Kea and the southern by Mauna Loa. The western border of the Pohakuloa Training Center is marked by the Hualālai volcanic mountains. The eastern edge of the base borders the Hilo Forest Reserve that is home to several endangered species including the bird Palila (Loxioides bailleui).

What does puʻu pōhaku loa mean??

Since coastal areas were developed into tourist resorts, military areas were moved inland to more remote locations. The name of the current facility comes from puʻu pōhaku loa, which means "long rocky cinder cone" in the Hawaiian Language, although like many other Hawaiian names, the same name has been used for other places on the island.
