Manual Labor Employment, And Training!

Preview

1. The first manual labor job I got was working for a tree surgeon when I was 17 years old. Though not the "classic" type of manual labor you may be thinking of, e.g., working on a construction site, it was about as strenuous as I would ever want any employment to be. My boss would climb the trees with a chain saw and cut copious amounts of logs and brush wood which would fall to the ground in large, awkwardly tangled heaps. It was my job to cut the logs to length, stack them, and clear the debris away as quickly as possible. It seemed endless. Just as I had cleared one batch of logs and brush wood, the ground would be littered with another seemingly larger pile. These logs weren't light. They could be anything up to about 140 pounds. This process would sometimes continue, with minimal rest, for up to three hours at a time. I gave little or no regard to lifting style—there wasn't the time, the work pace was far too rapid—but luckily I sustained little injury through this. I would proba...

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have to train for manual labor?

There is no clear-cut training plan for manual laborers. Instead, you will have to take into account the physical demands of your job and adjust your training around this. If you know that certain days are going to be more strenuous than others, then alter your training based on this.

Is it good to do manual labor to build strength?

Manual labor is mostly good for conditioning, not really for developing strength. If you are untrained then sure, but if you have been lifting weights for a long time don't expect much. I think most would agree that the cardio benefit of any "hard work job" far outweighs any big power gains.

What does manual labor do to your body?

Manual labor builds the strength required to complete manual labor. Typically, there isn't a progressive overload, so once you are adapted to the demands of the work you're not stressing your recovery so much. Indeed. Speaking as a manual labourer for the last four years I can say the plateau is real and comes quickly.

Why are women less likely to get manual labor jobs?

That’s one of the reasons women are seen less often in such jobs as civil engineering, construction, and other careers that entail heavy labor. Besides, more women have been seeking and landing college degrees, which guide them toward less physically demanding positions.
