1. Take some bookmarks and business cards: Bookmarks are a great gift and a great way get someone else interested in your book. Think of it as free advertisement.
2. Start with a great pen: I actually love the flow of a gel pen. It glides across the page and wont bled through. Don't be afraid of using a different color pen.
3. Crowding your writing arm: Make sure you have space for your writing arm. An employee from the book store can accidentally bump your arm as your autographing.
4. Authors with disabilities: if you're an author who has disability where it's hard for you to sign your signature think about purchasing a custom stamp and you can make a mark along sign it.
5. Demanding fans: if you have a fan who is over the top with excitement and demanding.
6. Practice your signature: Practice makes perfect!
7. Take pictures: This is a great opportunity to take photos with your fans.
8. Sign on the title page: I like to sign my books on the title page. In most cases, this is where most books are autographed.
9. Make it personal: Personalize your message. Ask "Is it for you or is it a gift for someone else?" - Which might prompt them into buying a second copy as a gift for someone else!

1. DO - Write your own announcement for the book stores intercom. Make it short and brief. Give them several versions, because they usually announce that you are there several times.
2. DON'T - Don't just sit at the table they have for you. Most authors do that. Be different! I always tell the person booking the signing not to worry about putting a chair behind the table.
3. DO - Have an attractive two color or four color book mark designed by a graphic artist and print thousands of them. You can give one to everyone who comes in the store.
4. DO - Get to know the "Community Relations" person. They are the ones who will book you again if they like you. I've been back to the same Barnes and Noble store three times in the last 9 months in the Phoenix area.
5. DO - Remember to call at least two months in advance if you want to be included in their in-store flyer.
6. DO - Go to Kinko's and have your book covers enlarged in color to an 11 x 17 poster, laminate them and have them put them on a poster type board with a stand up thing on the back.
7. DO - Ask them for a media list (radio, TV, etc.). Some don't have them, but the ones who do will usually share it or tell you where to get it. It makes calling the radio and TV stations easier.
8. DO - Ask for a community list, i.e., Chamber of Commerce, Society of the Arts, etc. Send them a news release about your book signing (and seminar or keynote, if applicable).
9. DO - Although the stores send news releases, send your own as well. This increases the chance of getting coverage.
10. DO - Call the radio and TV stations no less than a month in advance and request an interview the week of the signing. Send them a news release about your book signing.

1. Decide where to sign. I like to sign my books on the title page, which is where most books are autographed, though you can also sign the inside cover.
2. Personalize your message. In most cases people want the book inscribed to them personally, though sometimes it’s intended as a gift so be sure to ask, “Should I sign this to you?”
3. Choose a signature phrase. Ideally you should have one to three phrases that you write each time you sign a book so you don’t have to think too hard!
4. Make sure your name is legible. Consider the fact that someday your book could be a collector’s item! Even if it isn’t, do you want to leave any doubt that you’re the one who signed it?
5. Add a date (optional). Admitedly I usually omit the date—mostly because I can never remember what day it is! But recipients will appreciate it when you date your inscription.
6. Use a good pen. I’ll never forget the day I was signing books and the only pen I had on me was one of those cheap stick pens I picked up from a hotel room.
