3. Skillshare. From free. Another online learning community featuring more than 24,000 of classes in design, business, tech and more. Some are free, but you can unlock access to its full range of courses from £7 per month, and with nearly 4,000 illustration-related courses available there's plenty to learn there.
4. CreativeLive. From free. CreativeLive offers online classes for creative professionals, including classes that focus specifically on art and design. You'll need to pay between $49 and $299 (although there are often discounts) for its on-demand courses, but it also offers a ton of free, live and on-air classes.

1. Pens & Pencils. Let’s start with the basics. The popularity of digital tools and apps has increased as more people turn to their tablets and styluses, but a good pen or pencil is arguably the only thing you really need to be able to draw or illustrate.
2. Paper. For many book illustrators, there’s nothing more exciting than a fresh sheet of blank paper. As with selecting the right pen or pencil, selecting the right type of paper is part science, part emotion.
3. Tracing Paper. While you will eventually develop your own unique book illustration style, tracing paper can be extremely helpful when you are first developing your drawing skills.
4. A Ruler or Straight Edge. A ruler is an essential book illustration tool. A proper straight edge is vital to creating clean crisp, straight lines.
5. Reference Material. Some artists have imaginations so powerful, that they can draw straight from the scenes they visualize in their head. For others, having inspiring reference material is necessary.
6. A Camera. Speaking of reference materials, you can always create your own by taking photos of objects, landscapes, and even people that you would like to illustrate.
7. A High-Resolution Flatbed Scanner. This book illustration tool will open up a world of possibilities for your drawings. In addition to being able to make multiple prints and copies of your artwork, you can use software such as Adobe Illustrator or Adobe Photoshop to clean up and edit your hand-drawn illustrations.
8. An iPad or Tablet. If you prefer working in the digital realm, you could technically create beautiful illustrations without any of the above if you have a smart tablet, such as an iPad, and the right illustration software.
9. A Stylus. If you choose to work digitally, a stylus will help you get the most out of your iPad or tablet. A stylus is a pen-shaped object that you can use to draw on the surface of your tablet.
10. Illustration Apps. As digital illustration has become so popular, there are now many apps out there, created specifically to make drawing on a tablet with a stylus easy, beautiful, and fun.

1. Seek out stylistic inspiration. If this is your first time illustrating a children’s book, a good starting point is to get inspiration from your favorite artists and award-winning picture books.
2. Focus on character development. Most children’s books have a main character who will feature in every illustration. Practice drawing this character with different expressions and in different situations, remembering that continuity is especially important for young readers.
3. Begin with a storyboard. If you’re working with a publishing house, you may receive a brief from an editor, art director, or the book’s author. This brief outlines what each illustration should portray.
4. Seek feedback. Whether you’re getting feedback from an editor, author, art director, your friends and family, or fellow children’s illustrators, give yourself enough time to redraw illustrations based on critique.
5. Arrange the final artwork and text. Once the artwork is approved, you’ll need to lay it out with the text. If you’re working with a publishing company, they may have a book designer who will combine the text with your illustrations.

1. Draw thumbnail sketches of the book. These small, un-detailed sketches--only a square inch or two in size--will allow you to trace out the visual flow of the whole book.
2. Draw some study sketches of your story. Focus on character development, exploring a range of potential expressions, postures, and moods for each character you intend to illustrate.
3. Create a sketching template. Each illustration you produce will eventually cover one or two pages of a physical book, so it’s important to match the dimensions of your sketch with those of your final product.
4. Work with the text. Your illustrations should seamlessly follow the plot of the book as printed on each page. Try to capture details portrayed in the story, and look for ways to subtly foreshadow events in coming pages with your images.
5. Check for consistency. Make sure each of your characters are easily identifiable across the entire book. Check for consistent clothing, coloration, and expressions.
6. Share your sketches with your client. If you are illustrating for a client, be sure and run your sketches by them before proceeding. At this stage, images are relatively easy to alter or replace, and it is important to have the author’s full approval and feedback before you move on to painting.
7. Prepare final sketches of each spread. Using your study sketches for reference, resize your images to their target size and add any extra details--objects, textures, or scenery--you want to put in the illustration.
