2. Post-it Cover Up. For this activity write the memory verse on the front board of the classroom. Practice reading it once together and then use post-it notes to cover up one of the words.
3. Secret Decoder. In this activity, the teacher will prepare a secret code on paper ahead of time and make enough copies for the class. At the top of the paper, make a code where a number or small icon represents each letter of the alphabet.
4. Move it or Lose It. Many children learn best by moving. A creative way to break up long lengths of sitting still in Sunday School is to brainstorm motions with the students to match their memory verse.
5. Sparkle. This is a whole group game intended to use as a review of verses already learned. The children will stand in a circle facing one another. The teacher says a reference for a recent memory verse.
6. Word Card Scramble. The teacher writes each word of the verse on separate index cards and mixes them up. Each child is given a set of cards which holds one complete verse.
7. Sketching Bible Verses. This words great on highly visual verses (see examples). You’ll need a dry erase maker and board. Alternatively you can use poster board, giant Post-It notes, or sidewalk chalk.
8. Erase the Verse. After introducing the Bible memory verse, write it on the dry erase board. Have the children read the verse together. Then ask for a volunteer to read it aloud.
9. Paper Cutup Puzzle. Make several copies of the memory verse printed on white paper with a large font. (see examples) Then each line should be cut into strips so each child will have only a few words each.
10. Discover the Verse. Select a scripture memory verse and write each word on a single paper plate. For my example I am using Matthew 22:29 “You shall love your neighbors as yourself.”
11. Organize their Friends. Assign plates one-per-child as in the game above Instead of letting them set the order have the seated children without the plates determine the order.

1. Hand Motions. When it comes to young kids, movement is gold. Try breaking down your verse into small phrases. For each phrase, add a hand motion. It’s great if it can be specific such as pointing to your face for the word face, but even for phrases with no motions, you can do things like stomp, jump, or clap.
2. Sing it. Music is such a powerful tool, and I find myself breaking out in song all the time! I remember verses I learned 40 years ago because I remember the songs that go with them.
3. Say it Silly. This one is a family favorite. It’s so much fun to memorize Scripture using silly voices. This gives kids the practice of saying it over and over again without the monotony of doing it the same way.
4. Puzzler. You’ll need paper and something to write with for this one. And it might be best to have two people play this Scripture verse game. Each person writes out a verse but leaves empty blanks to be filled in.
5. Scrambler. There are multiple ways to scramble up a verse! You can mix up the individual words and put them back in order or group different phrases of the verse together and place them in the correct order.
6. Draw it. You can really get creative with this memory verse game! Draw the nouns in the verse and show what the verse means. But don’t just think paper and pencils—use sidewalk chalk, computer design, or paint.
7. Erase the Verse. Your kids can compete against themselves with this game. First, they’ll need to write the verse, then erase part and see if they can remember the words.
8. Snap it. Songs are powerful because of their rhythm. Even if you don’t know a song, you can create a rhythm by snapping. Simply snap on each word. The verse will naturally fall into a rhythm that your kids will remember.
9. Write it out. A simple memory verse activity is to write your verse in a journal or notebook. The act of writing something out helps your mind better remember and think through words.
10. Use an app. If you’re always on the go, reviewing verses on an app is a great way to use your free moments. The company BibleMemory.com offers a couple of Scripture memory apps including one specifically for kids with icons and pictures!

2. Mad Gab Memory Verse. This is a good game for introducing a new memory verse. Just like the card game ‘Mad Gab’ from Mattel©. It’s a game of words and phrases, it’s not what you say, it’s what you hear.
3. Human buzzer – fill in the blanks. (From p. 78 Programs 2 Go by Ken Moser) This is a good game for introducing a new memory verse. Using a white board, put underscore dashes on the board for every letter in each word of the memory verse eg.
4. Jigsaw Puzzle. (From p. 75 Creative Christian Ideas by Ken Moser) Write the memory verse on cardboard and then cut it up to form a jigsaw puzzle. Split everyone into groups and give one jigsaw puzzle to each group.
5. Pass the Parcel. (From p. 79 Creative Christian Ideas by Ken Moser) Hide a word of the memory verse in each layer of the parcel (with or without prizes).
6. Eat Out! Memory Verse. Get 2 disposable paper bowls for each word of the memory verse. Write one memory verse word on each bowl (if it’s a long verse write a few words) so that there is two sets of bowls with the complete memory verse in each set.
7. Balloon Darts. Print off 2 copies of the memory verse on different coloured paper and put the words of the memory verse into about 5-6 balloons. Blow up the balloons and stick them to the wall.
8. Whisper memory verse. Get everyone in a big circle (or into smaller circles if the group is too big, but the bigger the group the better for this game).
9. Application Pictures. Ask the group “what situations would it be useful to know this memory verse?” and then draw pictures of those situations on the white board/butchers paper.
10. Memory Verse Skits. Split into smaller groups and create a skit that demonstrates how the memory verse might be applied to a real life situation. This is much like “Application Pictures” except it’s “Application Skits”!

1. Choose a verse you may already know. Memorizing Scripture is a wonderful way to keep the Word of God close to you. Psalm 119:11 says, “I have stored up Your word in my heart, that I might not sin against You.”
2. Use the right translation and stick with it. Some translations are harder to memorize than others; some may be paraphrased and not a full translation.
3. Start small, then work in stages. Don’t assume that you can memorize an entire book of the Bible in one go. Choose one chapter or a short psalm. If that’s too difficult at first, start with just one verse (John 3:16 is an excellent starting place).
4. Pray through scripture. An excellent way to help you memorize Scripture is simply to pray it. By praying Scripture, we mean taking a passage of Scripture and incorporate that language into your prayers.
5. Use the reference. Memorizing Scripture is always a good idea; it’s an even better idea to know where it comes from. Even if you only memorize a short passage, memorize the book, chapter, and verse along with it.
6. Write it down. There are many different methods of learning and an equally infinite number of techniques for memorizing information. You can apply many of these techniques to memorize the Bible.
7. Listen as well as read. Audio Bibles are another good memorization tool. As with our earlier note, if you are listening to help you commit it to memory you should choose the proper translation.
8. Say it out loud. If you can find some time alone, speaking Scripture out loud is an excellent memorization technique. Read the words on the page out loud, and repeat it several times.
9. Keep it in front of you at all times. Psalm 1:2 says, “But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on His law he meditates day and night.” If you want to keep the Bible fresh in your memory and continually add to what you have memorized, remain faithful in reading it daily.
10. Use music, mnemonics, or another memory aid. There are lots of other memory aids that can help you store up Scripture in your heart. Listening to Christian music is a good way to start memorizing the Bible.
