2. A History of Western Philosophy by Bertrand Russell. It’s easy to get overwhelmed by the sheer number of influential philosophers and philosophical ideas in the world, which is why this book is a great jumping-off point.
3. Nichomachean Ethics by Aristotle. The best philosophy books are the ones that make us question how we can be better human beings and how we can live happier lives.
4. Sophie’s World by Jostein Gaarder. If you are looking for a good introduction to philosophy but can’t quite make your way through Bertrand Russell’s mammoth work, a captivating alternative is the fiction book Sophie’s World.
5. The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli. Machiavelli wrote his timeless classic The Prince while in exile as punishment by the Medici for suspected conspiracy.
6. Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert M. Pirsig. Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance is another fictionalized autobiographical look at philosophy told through a road trip undertaken by a father and son and their two friends from Minnesota to Northern California.
7. Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl. Despite being a neurologist and psychiatrist, Viktor Frankl shares deep insights into what it means to be a human being which is something philosophers have struggled with for centuries.
8. Beyond Good and Evil by Friedrich Nietzsche. The principles of good and evil, which factored heavily into earlier philosophy, are tossed out the window by Nietzsche who chastised earlier philosophers for buying into a universal premise of morality and claiming that a “good man” is the opposite of an “evil man.”
9. Analects by Confucius. The works of Confucius are some of the most widely read and studied in the Eastern world.His philosophy has greatly influenced how many lived and worked.

1. A Very Short Introduction series. To start with, I think some of the best philosophy books for beginners comes from the A Very Short Introduction series, published by Oxford University Press.
2. The Philosophy Book: Big Ideas Simply Explained. You’ve probably seen this book lying around your local bookstore. In my opinion, it’s one of the best philosophy books for beginners available, thanks to its accessibility.
3. A History of Western Philosophy: From the Pre-Socratics to Postmodernism. I think author C. Stephen Evans has done a truly admirable job tracing the history of Western philosophy, spanning the days before Socrates all the way up to postmodernism.
4. Philosophy 101 (An Essential Primer on the History of Thought) I find Philosophy 101 to be an alluring introduction to the history of great philosophers and their ideas, presented in chronological order.
5. How Philosophy Works: The Concepts Visually Explained. If you’re more of a visual learner, How Philosophy Works will be right up your alley. The book seeks to demystify dense philosophical ideas via tons of beautifully designed infographics.
6. Think: A Compelling Introduction to Philosophy. Simon Blackburn, who wrote Think, is also the author of the Oxford Dictionary of Philosophy, In other words, he knows his stuff, and most definitely has the cred to guide you on your philosophical journey.
7. A Little History of Philosophy. Published by Yale University Press, the Little Histories series is widely appreciated for its great introductions on big topics.
8. What Does It All Mean? : A Very Short Introduction to Philosophy. Thomas Nagel has written one of the best books on philosophy for beginners that also mixes in his personal opinions.
9. Philosophy: The Classics. Routledge has released some incredible philosophy books for beginners over the years. However, Warburton’s Philosophy: The Classics is by far one of my favorites (yes, he also wrote A Little History of Philosophy!).
10. Philosophy Made Slightly Less Difficult: A Beginner’s Guide to Life’s Big Questions. Yet another fantastic introductory book on philosophy that’ll keep you immersed.

1. The Republic by Plato. Plato’s Republic is unparalleled in its coverage of all areas of life. While Plato addresses metaphysical issues, he does so with language and analogies that most people can grasp with studious reading.
2. Nicomachean Ethics by Aristotle. In the Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle’s guiding question is: what is the best thing for a human being? His answer is happiness, but he means, not something we feel, but rather a specially good kind of life.
3. A History Of Western Philosophy by Bertrand Russell. Since its first publication in 1945 Lord Russell’s A History of Western Philosophy has been universally acclaimed as the outstanding one-volume work on the subject.
4. Beyond Good And Evil by Friedrich Nietzsche. Beyond Good and Evil confirmed Nietzsche’s position as the towering European philosopher of his age. The work dramatically rejects the tradition of Western thought with its notions of truth and God, good and evil.
5. Zen And The Art Of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert M. Pirsig. In his autobiographical first novel, Pirsig wrestles both with the ghost of his past and with the most important philosophical questions of the 20th century.

10. The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. The Brothers Karamazov is a passionate philosophical novel set in 19th century Russia, that enters deeply into the ethical debates of God, free will, and morality.
