There is no coach class on the Acela. Entry level is business class (not bad marketing, right?). There are four business-class cars (including the popular quiet car), one cafe car and one first-class cabin, which is closed off from the rest of the train. The first class car was the last car on the train. Seats are basically the same as in Acela Express business class. They’re a bit wider, a bit more legroom, but they’re similar. The benefit I think is that there are solo seats (seating 1-2 rather than 2-2) so you can have more personal space if you’re traveling alone.

First class will be arranged in a spacious 1-2 configuration. There will be a mix of forward-facing seats, along with sets of single and paired seats that face each other. Each car will have six LED screens, with train speed, location and conductor announcements. The bathrooms will be getting a much-needed refresh, too.

Bottom line, Acela First Class was ok. The service–not great, the attitudes of the attendants–not great, Club Acela–not even close, the complimentary food–pretty decent, and the complimentary beverages–great. However, I think that by using a free upgrade, I still maximized the value of my trip given the circumstances.
